Updates

5/3/2006

My previous email does not apply to student employees at this time.  We will be updating our databases to include you after the semester break.  Stay tuned for further developments.

Also, this DOES NOT affect your passwords, it is UserID ONLY.

Thanks,

Kay

This will be the first of my messages to keep you updated as to what will be going on with your email throughout this migration.  All of these messages will be posted on the internet, you will be able to get to them by going to the main tamucc webpage, then to faculty and staff, on the right side you will find a section John is dedicating to email.  The updates link will take you to these messages.  Please give us a few days to get that in place.

The first bit of news is that your Novell and GroupWise Userid will be changed in preparation for the migration.  This is the id you use to login to the systems NOT your email address, (i.e. adssc103 will become cjones).  To find out what your new userid will be, you can go to the following link:

https://falcon.tamucc.edu/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/sammgr/getuserid.cgi

You will need to know your Universal Identification Number (UIN) that you use for HR connect.  You can go to this link now, and we will soon have a link on the Faculty/Staff webpage.

We will be renaming the accounts the week of May 15th and will call your department prior to changing ids.  If you are off campus, please be aware of the change and be prepared to use your new id.

Thank you in advance for your patience during this transition, in the end it will be better for us all,

Kay

FAQs

What will happen to my old email?

Your GroupWise Mailbox (inbox + cabinet) will be migrated to the new system by Computer Services. Your archives will be migrated by either Computer Services or you, depending on their location. Either way, we will have software to help us.

Will our new userid apply to GroupWise Web Access?

Yes, it will apply to anything that you currently access with it, NetWare, GroupWise Client, GroupWise WebAcess, and Instant Messenger.

Does the message below apply to people without Groupwise Accounts?  Which accounts are being renamed?

Only the Novell/Groupwise Userid will change.  It is being changed to match your current falcon Userid.  The falcon Userid will not be changed.

Will you be sending something out about those migrating from Falcon? Will pine continue to be available on falcon without the smtp server so that we can search old messages?

Plans for Falcon E-Mail accounts as of today: On August 1st, we will have all Falcon e-mail accounts forwarding to the matching Exchange account.  You will be able to read all new e-mail via the Outlook Web Access client.  We will continue to run the IMAP/POP server on falcon for a as-yet-to-be-determined amount of time.  This will allow users to continue to access their old Falcon e-mail using their current clients (including pine).  In the future, you will need to have either Outlook (Windows) or Entourage (Mac) installed on your desktop.  We will provide directions at that time on how to use either Outlook or Entourage with IMAP to pull old Falcon e-mail into the Exchange system at that time.  After a period of time, we will then turn off IMAP/POP services on falcon, pine will go away at this time.  Right now the period of time suggested is from six months to a year to give Falcon users enough time to sort and move their old Falcon mail off into the new Exchange system.

I would like to suggest that it is in the university's interest to continue to receive and redirect messages sent to user@falcon and other similar addresses INDEFINITELY.  Those addresses appear in print in journal articles and may be used for a while.

We strongly encourage all E-Mail users to start to use the Official e-mail address listed in the Phonebook (http://phonebook.tamucc.edu) for all official correspondence.  This address (firstname.lastname@tamucc.edu) will continue to be the official address after the migration to Exchange.  Right now you can set it up so mail going to this address is forwarded to whatever your preferred e-mail
system is.  On August 1st, we will make this mail automatically start to go to the new Exchange account.  As far as maintaining the forwards of falcon mail indefinitely, that issue will need to be addressed by Mr.
Irby, and the Provost.  Technically, it is possible.  From a security and management standpoint, not as desired.

Will the e-mail messages that I have moved to my GroupWise folders still be available to me?

Yes, the email in your folders will be migrated by computer services over the summer.
